The first race of 2013 was definitely a great first step. While I didn't run as fast as I may have wanted, it's always nice to start the season with a PR. My personal record going into the healthy high 10k was 48:55 at the Beach to Beacon. I knew I was in shape to run a PR. I ran 28:13 at the Thanksgiving Day 4 Miler in Portland, and ran 13:10 in a two mile time trial. Going into the race, I hadn't really done any speed work. Mainly tempo runs. Also, it's difficult to do proper speed workouts on a treadmill when the weather sucks. Anyway, back to the race. My goal was to negative split (that obviously didn't happen). I felt really controlled in the first mile. I didn't want to go out to slow, and found myself in a nice groove. I was ecstatic when I clicked my watch and saw 7:20 and change. Right then, I knew I had made great strides (pun intended) since Beach to Beacon. I think I became a little too relaxed after that. After knowing I was capable of 7:20 pace, I eased off thinking I could push it during the last 5k. I couldn't have been anymore wrong. Even though I was passing people, I wasn't going any faster. I tried to make a big surge during the fourth mile, but I didn't manage to get any faster. From there, I tried my best to hang on. My sixth mile was my second fastest of the day. Overall, the race was a success. It's always nice to set a PR, and I look forward to dropping my times even lower as I continue to train, and run more races.
