Boys Class A Distance Preview

Don't expect any of the distance record to get broken tomorrow, but with quality depth in each of the distance races, expect to see close finishes in all of them. Caleb Lord of Hampden will be looking to win the mile and the two mile.

 

800

Record: Sam Fletcher 1:56.29 Edward Little 2004

 

The 800 will be one of the premiere events of the day as there are eight different runners who are all capable of winning on any given day. Hany Ramadan of Deering comes into the meet with the fastest time in Class A in 2:02.71 which he ran back in mid-January. He also has a 400 personal record of 50.69, so if the race is tactical expect him to make a big move at the end. Ben Salinas of Bangor will pose a threat to Ramadan as he comes into the meet with a season best time of 2:03.72. He ran that time at the EMITL Championships in which he won. Don’t count out Salinas’ teammate Jonathan Stanhope. The senior is a big time racer, and comes into the meet with a 2:04.7 seed time. Expect him to be in the mix as well. Other runners to watch in this event will be Christopher Tanner of Brunswick, Jon Gray of Gorham and Alex Karam of Scarborough.

 

Mile

Record: Ben Fletcher 4:16.46 Edward Little 1999

 

The mile might lack the depth it’s had in previous years, but it will still be one of the more exciting races of the day. Expect a showdown between Bangor’s Jonathan Stanhope and Caleb Lord of Hampden. They both come in with a seed time of 4:33 with Stanhope’s only .02 seconds faster. Stanhope ran his season best time at the USM Relays. Lord’s 4:33 came at the EMITL Championships where he placed second to Dan Curts of Ellsworth. While these two have the fastest seed times, don’t count out Aaron Willingham of Mt. Blue and Osman Doorow of Lewiston. Willingham has been recovering nicely from his injury during the xc season, and is starting to round into shape. He’s a big time racer, and should be in the mix tomorrow. Osman Doorow has had a breakout season this winter as he comes into the state meet with a personal record of 4:39.84. The sophomore will hope to contend with the big dogs tomorrow. Other runners to watch out for in this event will be Jacob Bloom of Scarborough, John Salamone of South Portland and James Phelps of Westbrook.

 

2 Mile

Record: Harlow Ladd 9:21.87 Messalonskee 2012

 The two mile will be another wide open event tomorrow, as there are possibly six different runners who could win. Jacob Terry of Scarborough comes into the meet with the fastest time in Class A running 10:04.93. He’s had a tremendous year of running and should be favored as he has great leg speed for a final kick if needed. Iid Sheikh-Yusuf of Deering will also be in the running for the title as well. He’s had a great season thus far. He won the two mile at the Southwestern Championships running a season best time of 10:06.59 beating Jacob Terry and Ryan Cadorette of Thornton Academy in the process. Cadorette will be one to watch as well. He had a breakout year on the trails, and should be able to run with the top runners in eastern Maine. The aforementioned Caleb Lord should also be in contention for the title. We will see how much left he has in the tank after the mile. Other runners to look out for will be Osman Doorow of Lewiston, Aaron Willingham of Mt. Blue and Luke Rand of Brewer.

The choice between Ellsworth and Cape Elizabeth for best trio in the state was incredibly tough to choose. Granted, Cape Elizabeth beat Ellsworth for their second straight Class B title, but Ellsworth's top end talent is slightly better than Cape's. Dan Curts was the leader for this team, but without the emergence of Brayden Beardsley, and the big time running ability of Robert Looker, Ellsworth wouldn't have been arguably the best team in the state this year. Curts, despite an injury to his hamstring, had a spectacular season on the trails, and isn't done yet. Beardsley became one of the states best runners after placing third in Class B at the state meet, and Looker showed he is capable of running in big time meets as evidence to his seventh place finish. Unfortunately, all three of these tremendous runners graduate next spring, but expect all of them to run fast times on the track this winter and spring.

1. Dan Curts Ellsworth

Ellsworth was one of the many teams who didn't compete this weekend. That shouldn't effect Curt's ranking for the time being. Look for Curts to run a fast time when Ellsworth competes at Blue Hill on Friday.

2. Josef Holt Telstar

Holt made it look easy as he cruised to a winning time of 16:26 on his home course. He was nearly two minutes ahead of the runner up. Look for Holt to run another fast time this week.

Trapani had no difficulty taking the win at Belfast as he cruised to a time of 17:10. Look for Trapani to notch another win at Medomak Valley on Friday.

Decker was impressive in his xc debut as he took home the victory at Lake Region winning by over twenty seconds. Let's hope he continues to run more races this season. If he runs this week, he will be the favorite to win at Falmouth on Friday.

Becker outkicked Cape's Liam Simpson by two seconds at Lake Region to take second place. Look for Becker to run a fast time at Falmouth on Friday.

Yes, I did list four runners right here, but with the emergence of Isiah Harris it was tough to break it down to their top three. Lewiston's top three was interchangeable which made them incredibly hard to beat this fall. Even if one runner had a bad day, Lewiston had three runners who could place near the top of the pack in any race. Even when Barre was injured earlier this year, Lewiston had enough fire power to succeed without him. Both Awil and Barre graduate next spring which means Isaiah Harris and Mohamed Mohamed will fight for the number one position next fall, and try to lead a young Lewiston squad to the promised land.

Liam Simpson and Peter Doane Cape Elizabeth

It’s always a luxury to have two of the top runners in you Class on the same team. That is what Cape Elizabeth had this year with Liam Simpson and Peter Doane. These two runners switched off numerous times throughout the season, and pushed each other to greatness which led to Cape’s first state title since 2005. Both Simpson and Doane continued to step up their game once the post season rolled around. It was Doane who led the way for Cape at the Western Maine Regional Championships with his third place finish running a time of 17:28.20, and right on his heels was Simpson placing fourth running a time of 17:31.31. They flip flopped at the state meet with Simpson placing fifth running 16:55.42 and Doane following closely with a ninth place finish running 17:03.29. These two studs will be back next year, and will lead a loaded Cape Elizabeth team looking for a second straight title.

Josh Horne Mt. Blue

Last fall, Josh Horne placed 46^th at the Eastern Maine Regional Championships, and failed to qualify for the state meet. Fast forward a year late, and Horne took the state by storm, and concluded his spectacular season with a 4^th place finish at Class A state meet running a time of 16:47.89. It was believed that Mt. Blue would be led by veterans Justin Tracy and Sully Jackson this fall, but Horne surprised everybody and showed what he is capable of. His breakout race came at the Festival of Champions where he placed 15^th running a time of 16:47.97. From then on, Horne established himself as one of the best runners in the KVAC during the post season. He is the top returner for next fall, and will be the favorite to win the Class A title.

Tracy emerged as the number one runner for a very young Mt. Blue team this fall. His season was highlighted by his ninth place finish at the Class A State meet where he ran a time of 17:32.41. Look for Tracy to contend for the individual title in the KVAC next fall.

Class A State Meet Preview

Team Preview
Scarborough looks like the early favorite heading into the state meet with Mt Ararat, Gorham, Massabesic, Mt Blue, and Edward Little right at their heels. They key to this race will be the number four runners. If Scarborough wants to win, Robby Hall will have to try to close the gap between him and Scarborough’s “big three”. Gorham’s Will Ross will have to step up big time on Saturday especially since Cortland Dunn still isn’t back to race form since getting his appendix removed. Mt Ararat’s Nick Demonthenes will have to have a big race if Mt Ararat wants to close the gap between them and Scarborough. Other teams looking for top five finishes will be Lewiston, Cheverus, and Sanford.

Prediction
Scarborough will win their fifth title in the past seven years on Saturday. Nick Morris will lead the way for them as he will place in the top five, and teammates Tom Hague and Zach Brown will place in the top 15. Expect Scarborough to have a score in the low seventies. Mt Ararat will be the runner up, and their top runner, Andy Reifman-Packett, will contend for a top three finish. Following them will be Gorham, Massabesic, and Mt Blue. Other teams that could jump into the top five are Lewiston and Cheverus.

Individual Preview
The individual race will be fun to watch as there are at least five runners who could take the crown. Leading that group of runners will be Messalonkee’s Harlow Ladd. Ladd won the Eastern A Championship running a time of 16:30.95 as he was ten seconds ahead of second place finisher Will Lundquist of Cony. Expect him to be in the top pack as well. Andy Reifman-Packett of Mt Ararat will look to make a splash as well. Scarborough’s Nick Morris won the Western A Regional on Saturday so expect him to contend for a top three finish as well. Jacob Brooks of Massabesic is another one to watch. He was second to Morris on Saturday running a time of 17:02.8. Gorham’s Logan Marshall should be right the top guys. He placed fifth at the Western A Regional’s on Saturday. Also look out for Faisal Noor of Edward Little. He was fifth at the Eastern A Regional’s on Saturday. Jack Terwilliger of Cheverus placed ninth in just his second race back from an IT Band injury that sidelined him for seven weeks, so he could very well sneak into the top five. Other runners who will look for a top ten finish will be Tom Hague of Scarborough, Bryant Perkins of Sanford, and Peter LePage of Massabesic.

Prediction
Harlow Ladd will pull away in the final mile to take the crown in what could be a very fast time depending on the weather conditions. Rounding out the top five will be Andy Reifman-Packett, Nick Morris, Will Lundquist, and Logan Marshall. The next five spots will be up for grabs so look for Jacob Brooks, Jack Terwilliger, Bryant Perkins, Tom Hague and Peter LePage to fill in those spots in no particular order. Also look for runners such as Jaron Jones of Mt Blue, Hussein Mohamed of Edward Little, and Jake Letourneau of Mt Ararat to make a run towards a top ten finish. The order of the finish will be:

Week 5 Power Rankings

The Southwest Classic highlighted this week’s XC action as the top SMAA and WMC teams battled it out on Saturday. Falmouth and Cape rested their top runners while Gorham and Greely took the top two spots respectively. Individually, Fryeburg’s Silas Eastman dominated the field posting an impressive time of 16:42.44, and Wayneflete’s Abshir Horor was 2nd overall as we finally got to see how good he actually is. The heat played a big factor on Saturday as several top runners either dropped back or failed to finish. In other action, Edward Little continues to dominate the KVAC as they won easily at Oxford Hills on Friday while Mt Ararat and Mt Blue battled it out on Friday with Mt Ararat coming out victorious. Here are your updated rankings:

Week 4 Power Rankings

It was another great for XC as we saw some great individual performances and team performances as well. The biggest meet of the week was at Messalonske where Harlow Ladd and Faisal Noor went head to head for 3.1 miles as they finished 16:08 to 16:09 respectively. The team race was just as exciting as Edward Little pulled out the victory over Mt Blue 38 to 48. Falmouth, again, proved why they are the favorite in class B, and Gorham beat Massabesic to prove why they will be a top contender this year. Here are your updated power rankings:

Terwilliger pulled away from Gorham’s Logan Marshall to pull out the victory on Friday with an impressive time of 16:19. Terwilliger will be one of the many favorites to win the Southwestern Classic on Saturday.

3. Harlow Ladd Messalonske

Ladd was pushed wire to wire by Edward Little’s Faisal Noor on Friday, with Ladd eventually coming out with a one second victory. His time of 16:08 is the fastest 5k time of all classes so far and he looks to improve on that when Messalonske heads to Skowhegan.

Noor gets the fourth spot after pushing Harlow Ladd to the wire on Friday. He looks poised for a great season and look for him to contend with Ladd at the Eastern A Championships.

Follo won his third meet in a row on Friday as he covered the tough Falmouth course in 16:40. His streak will be on the line on Saturday as he will face the top dogs of class A at the Southwestern Classic on Saturday.

McClintock went unchallenged at Winthrop as he cruised through the 3.1 mile course in 16:45. He will get a tough test on Wednesday when he faces of against Boothbay’s Chase Brown.

Morris lead wire to wire as he paced the Scarborough Red Storm to a 1st place finish. He will get his chance to show his stuff against the best of class B on Saturday.

Marshall challenged Terwilliger for the first two miles of the race on Friday until Terwilliger pulled away. He will get another shot on Saturday when he faces the best of class A and B.
