An Early Look at Best Male Trios

Leading up to the regular season The SB Report will give up-to-date power rankings as well as previews for each of the annual awards. Here is the preview for the best male trios...

When Danny Ainge brought in Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett in the summer of 2007, the Celtics instantly became the most popular team in the NBA. The Celtics jumped right out of the gate as they won 30 of their first 34 games behind the brilliance of Pierce, Allen, and Garnett. The reason why I chose to write about THIS big three and not the recent is because all three players meshed together. Ray Allen is the shooting specialist who will go down as maybe the greatest shooter ever in the NBA. Garnett is the crafty low post scorer who will certainly make the Hall of Fame when he is done, and then you have Paul Pierce who can shoot, pass, and slash to the basket. The thing that really sets them apart from the other big three is that they know their role. The three all met in the summer before their championship run to make a compromise. They all realized that the number of shots that they’d take would go down, and they accepted their roles to make a championship team.

1. Scarborough- Robby Hall, Ian Morris, Jack Sullivan
   The trio of Hall, Morris, and Sullivan make Scarborough the team to beat in Class A. All three of these runners have performed at a high level in various road races this summer. All three of these runners should make a strong push at top ten finishes at the State meet.
   
   
2. Lewiston- Mohamed Barre, Mohamed Awil, Mohamed Mohamed
   Individual title threat Mohamed Bare leads the talented Lewiston trio that looks to contend with Scarborough for top gun in Class A. Barre looked very impressive this spring as we saw him run 4:26 and 9:47 in the 1600 and 3200 respectively.
   
   
3. Falmouth- Jay Lesser, Spencer Brown, Azad Jalali
   The defending Class B champs bring back three proven runners to an already deep team. Lesser had a breakout year last fall as we saw him place 13^th in Class B. Brown and Jalali are two of Falmouth's best middle distance runners as we saw them both clock under 2:04 in the 800.
   
   
4. Caribou- Ron Lund, Ryan Washington, Lucas Kinney
   Caribou will once again have a strong trio in Lund, Washington, and Kinney. Lund placed 10^th in Class B last year. Look for him to contend for a top five finish this year. Washington had a good year last fall as well as we saw him place 14^th overall. Kinney has run some good times on the track this spring. He will give Caribou the boost to contend for top gun in Class B.
   
   
5. Bangor Christian- Sam Proctor, Zac Palmeter, Seth Pearson
   Bangor Christian will bring back two experienced runners and a rising sophomore ready for the big stage. They placed sixth in Class C last year, but with Proctor leading the charge and an upcoming Seth Pearson Bangor Christian should be one of the favorites in Class C.

Boys XC Individual Rankings: 13-11

13. Ron Lund Caribou

    SB: 17:31.4

    Lund had a great Junior season highlighted by his tenth place finish at the Class B State meet as he ran a time of 17:31.4. Look for Lund to bring his talents to another level next fall and contend with the top runners of the PVC.

    
    

    
    

12. Jamie Ross Brunswick

    SB: 17:03

    Ross had a breakout year this fall as his season was highlighted by his 8^th place finish at the Eastern Maine Regional Championships as he ran a time of 17:30.19. Look for Ross to contend for the individual title in the KVAC next fall.

    
    

    
    

11. Justin Tracy Mt. Blue

SB: 17:05

Tracy emerged as the number one runner for a very young Mt. Blue team this fall. His season was highlighted by his ninth place finish at the Class A State meet where he ran a time of 17:32.41. Look for Tracy to contend for the individual title in the KVAC next fall.

Girls XC Individual Rankings: 16-14

16. Adrienne Carmack John Bapst

    SB: 20:28.67

    Carmack had a breakout season this fall highlighted by her 8^th place finish at the Class B State Championships as she ran a fine time of 20:44.66. Look for Carmack to contend for the for the top spot in Class B next year.

15. Mackenzie Belyea Caribou

    SB: 20:31.34

    Belyea proved herself as a big time racer as evidence to her seventh place finish at the Class B State Meet one week after she placed 8^th at the Eastern Maine Regional. Expect Belyea to be one of the favorites in the PVC next fall.

14. Kelly Lynch Mt. Ararat

SB: 19:53

Lynch was one of the most improved runners in the state this year as we saw her place 9^th at the Class A State Championships running a time of 20:37.53. Her experience and big time racing ability helped lead Mt. Ararat to a runner up finish. Look for her to contend for the individual title in the KVAC next year.

Boys XC Individual Rankings: 20-17

20. Nick Eaton York

    SB: 17:35.6

    Eaton proved himself as a big time racer this fall as we saw him place 15^th at the Class B State Championships running a time of 17:46.8. Expect Eaton to contend with the top dogs of the WMC next fall.

    
    

19. Nick Shuckrow Winslow

    SB: 17:21.0

    Shuckrow had a breakout season this fall highlighted by his fifth place finish at the Class B Eastern Regional Championships as he ran a time of 17:37.07. Look for Shuckrow to contend for the Eastern B Regional title next fall.

    
    

18. Nathan MacKenzie Mt. Ararat

    SB: 17:46.6

    MacKenzie had a great Sophomore campaign as he was consistently Mt. Ararat's number two runner. His season was highlighted by his 16^th place finish at the Class A State Meet running a time of 17:46.6. Look for MacKenzie to be contend with the top runners of the KVAC next fall.

    
    

17. Ryan Washington Caribou

    SB: 17:43.98

    Washington was consistently the number three runner for a Caribou team that narrowly missed a runner up finish in Class B. Like many of the runners in this group, Washington proved himself as a big time racer as evidence to his 14^th place finish at the state meet running a time of 17:43.98.    Falmouth dominated their Class B Regional behind Tim Follo's second place finish. The Yachtsmen look like the overwhelming favorite to win their first Class B state title since 2002.

2. Scarborough

   The Red Storm captured the Western A title behind Nick Morris's first place finish. Scarborough looks like the favorite to defend their title from last year.

   The Vikings squeaked by Ellsworth to take the Eastern B title behind Caleb Chapman's fourth place finish. Look for Caribou to contend for a top three finish in Class B this Saturday.

   NYA captured their second straight Regional title behind Cam Regan's sixth place finish. They look like the early favorite for Class C heading into the state meet this Saturday.

   The Rams took home the Eastern A title behind Jon Stanhope's tenth place finish. Look for Bangor to contend for the team title for Class A this Saturday.

   The Red Riots placed second in Class A at the Western Maine Regional Championships behind Ryan Tuttle's 13^th place finish. Look for South Portland to contend for a top three finish in Class A this Saturday.

   York placed third in Class B at the Western Maine Regional Championships behind Mitch Finitz's fifth place finish. Look for the Wildcats to contend for a top three finish in Class B this Saturday.

   McClintock took home another Regional Title as he cruised to the fastest time of all classes (16:00.23). Look for him to take his third individual title in a row this Saturday.

2. Silas Eastman Fryeburg

   Previous: 2

   Last Meet: WMR

   Place: 1^st Class B

   Time: 16:18.11

   Eastman was able to relax this week as he cruised to a fast time of 16:18.11 which was the second fastest time of all classes on Saturday. Look for him to take his second individual title in a row this Saturday.

3. Nick Morris Scarborough

   Place: 1^st Class A

   Time: 17:03.30

   Morris cruised to an easy victory in Class A as he posted the seventh time of all classes (17:03.30). Morris looks like the early favorite to defend his individual title this Saturday.

4. Chase Brown Boothbay

   Place: 2^nd Class C

   Time: 16:46.31

   Brown placed second in Class C West running a fine time of 16:46.31. His time was the third fastest of all classes on Saturday. Look for Brown to try and chase down Matt McClintock this Saturday.

   Curts cruised to an easy victory at Belfast as he posted the second fastest time of all classes (16:41.90). Look for Curts to battle with Tim Follo for second place in Class B.

   Eastman got a serious challenge from Tim Follo at the WMC Championships on Saturday with Eastman eventually pulling out the victory running a time of 16:37.67. Eastman looks like the early favorite to take the Western B title in Cumberland this Saturday.

3. Nick Morris Scarborough

   Last Meet: Home

   Place: 1^st

   Time: 16:29.73

   Morris ran a fantastic time of 16:29.73 on the very hilly Smiling Hill Farm course. Look for Morris to challenge for the individual title in Class A at the Western Maine Regional Championships this Saturday.

   Place: 2^nd (1^st in Division One)

   Follo nearly pulled off the upset of the year as he came oh so close to edging Silas Eastman. Follo was the first Division one runner to cross the line that day in a time of 16:38.21. If Saturday was any indication, then we are in for one heck of a race at the Western B Regionals in Cumberland.

   Brown placed second at the MVC Championships running a time of 16:56 on the tough Augusta course. Look for Brown to try and close the gap between himself and Matt McClintcok at the class C Western Regional Championships this Saturday.

Scarborough cruised to an easy victory on their home course behind Nick Morris’ first place finish. The Red Storm head to Deering this Friday where they should go unchallenged.

2. Falmouth
Previous: 2
Last Meet: at Freeport
Place: 1st
The depth of this Falmouth team is absolutely ridiculous. Even without their number one runner, Tim Follo (who was out with a sickness), Falmouth managed to place eight runners in the top ten overall. Falmouth heads to Wells on Thursday where they should cruise to an easy victory.

3. Caribou

Last Meet: Aroostook Invitational
Place: 1st
The Vikings dominated at the Aroostook Invitational as they placed five runners in the top eight overall. They will head to the Sectional Invitational this Saturday in Old Town.

4. NYA
Previous: 4
Last Meet: at GNG
Place: 1st
NYA won easily on the very challenging GNG course behind Cam Regan’s second place finish. NYA will face a tough challenge when they head to Cape Elizabeth on Friday.

5. Greely

Last Meet: at NYA
Place: 2nd
The results from the Lake Region meet haven’t been posted yet, but that shouldn’t affect the Ranger’s ranking for the time being. Greely will head to the Manchester Invitational this Saturday.

Place: 1st
York cruised to an easy victory on their home course behind Mitch Finitz’s second place finish. The Wildcats will face off against NYA and Cape Elizabeth this Friday.

7. South Portland

Place: 1st
John Wilkinson led South Portland to an easy victory at Gorham behind his second place finish. South Portland will host Windham and Noble this Friday.

8. Bangor
Previous: 8
Last Meet: at Hampden Academy
Place: 1st
Bangor edged out ninth ranked Hampden Academy 34 to 38 last Friday behind Jon Stanhope’s first place finish. Bangor will head to MCI this Friday.

9. Hampden Academy

Place: 1st
Hampden Academy nearly pulled out a victory on their home course losing to Bangor last Friday. Hampden Academy will head to Cony on Friday.

Bapst looked very impressive on their home course as their top four runners placed 1-4. John Bapst will head to the Sectional Invitational at Old Town this Saturday.

McClintock defeated his Class C rival Chase Brown on the tough UMA course running a fantastic time of 16:17. McClintock has already clocked under 16 minutes for a 5k this year, so we will be expecting some very fast times from this kid as the season goes on.

2. Silas Eastman Fryeburg

Place: 1st
Time: 16:36
Eastman’s time of 16:36 at Freeport was nearly a minute faster than the second place finisher. Expect Eastman to run a very fast time this week when Fryeburg heads to Cape Elizabeth.

3. Harlow Ladd Messalonskee

Place: 1st
Time: 16:37
Ladd went unchallenged on his home course as he ran a season best time of 16:37. His time was over a minute faster than the second place finisher. Expect Ladd to take home another victory this Friday when Messalonskee heads to MCI

Brown ran a fantastic time of 16:59 on the very tough UMA course. This was Brown’s first test against McClintock this year. Expect Brown to try to close the gap between himself and McClintock as the season goes on.

Follo had a sickness last Friday which prevented him from racing. Expect Follo to recover and run a fast time on the Wells course this Thursday.

Curst has been the best sophomore in the state thus far. Expect him to run a fast time this Saturday when Ellsworth heads to the Sectional Invitational in Old Town.

Reifman-Packett took advantage of his home course as he cruised to an easy victory running a time of 17:34. He will face a tough challenge when Mt. Ararat heads to Brunswick this Thursday.

Pierce used his home course to his advantage as he won comfortably running a fantastic time of 15:09 for 2.9 miles. Expect him to take home another victory when Merriconeag heads to Yarmouth this Friday.

Dunn had a fantastic race at Gorham as his time of 16:40 was nearly thirty seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Expect Dunn to run another fast time when Kennebunk heads to Massabesic on Friday.

Falmouth won easily on their home course behind a very strong race from Senior Tim Follo. Falmouth also had strong races from Jay Lesser and Connor McGrory. The Yachtsmen will head to Merriconeag on Friday where it looks like they could go unchallenged.

Finish: 1st
Greely dominated on their home course behind Stefan Sandrueter's third place finish (17:30). Greely will have a tough to challenge when they head to NYA his Friday.

He has been undefeated against Maine competition since the beginning of his sophomore year. Fryeburg will host York, Yarmouth, and Sacopee Valley on Friday. If Eastman is ready to go, expect him to run away with the victory.

I still give McClintock the slight edge over Ladd right now. McClintock pulled away from Ladd at the Festival of Champions last year. Matt will finally get his chance to compete this week when Madison heads to Carrabec on Wednesday.

Ladd’s time of 17:20 was a mere three seconds slower than the course record set by former Mt. Blue superstar Kelton Cullenberg. His time was over a minute faster than the second place finisher. Messalonskee heads to Waterville on Friday where it looks like Ladd will go unchallenged.

Boys XC Preseason Power Rankings

TEAM

1. Scarborough
Next Meet: SMAA Relays
The defending class A champions return three of their top five runners with top returnee, and 2010 individual champion, Nick Morris, leading the charge. Robby Hall and Wout Moulin round out the Red Storm’s top three which gives them one of the best triple threats in the state. Scarborough looks like the overwhelming favorite going into the fall.

2. Falmouth
Next Meet: Home vs. NYA, Lake Region, York
Falmouth returns four of their top five returners from last year’s runner up squad, which makes the Yachtsmen the early favorite in class B. Leading the way for Falmouth will be Senior Tim Follo. He placed second at last year’s state meet. Look for him to help carry Falmouth to the promise land.

3. Greely
Next Meet: Home vs. Fryeburg, Merriconeag, Traip, Wells
Right on Falmouth’s heels will be the Greely Rangers. Stefan Sandrueter is their top returner; he placed tenth at the state meet last year. If Greely hopes to take down Falmouth runners like, Nathan Maderia, and Issac Emery will have to step up to the challenge.

4. Caribou
Next Meet: Ellsworth Invitational
The loss to Christian Sleeper hurts the Vikings, but they still return four runners from last year’s state championship team. Caleb Chapman will lead the way for Caribou this year. Expect him to have a big year if Caribou wants to repeat.

5. NYA
Next Meet: at Falmouth
NYA has one of the better 1, 2 combinations in the state in Cam Regan and Evan Kendall which is why they are, yet again, the favorites to defend their class C title.

6. York
Next Meet: at Falmouth
York’s top returner this fall will be Mitch Finitz. He had a breakout year last year as we saw him place seventh at the class B state meet. If York hopes to keep up with the big dogs of the WMC then Alec Jordan, Nick Eaton, and Josh Brooks will all have to have big years.

7. South Portland
Next Meet: SMAA Relays
South Portland looked very impressive at the Laliberte Invitational on Saturday winning in convincing fashion behind Thomas Salamones fifth place finish overall. Look for South Portland to make a charge towards a top three finish at the state meet this year.

8. Wayneflete
Next Meet: at Poland
Wayneflete has one of the more impressive triple threats in the state this year which consists of Abshir Horor, Abukar Adan, and Josh Espy. Look for Wayneflete to give NYA a run for their money this fall.

9. Ellsworth
Next Meet: Ellsworth Invitational
Super Soph Dan Curts will lead the charge for Ellsworth this year. He had a spectacular freshmen campaign as we saw him place third at the class B state meet. If Ellsworth hopes to keep up with Caribou in the east, then runners such as Blake Pattengale and Stephen Kirby will have to step up to the challenge.

10. Kennebunk
Next Meet: SMAA Relays
Kennebunk’s top returner this year will be Chris Dunn. He had a breakout year last fall as we saw him place 16th at the class A state meet. Cameron Weiwel and Robert Ekland will both have to have great seasons if Kennebunk hopes for a top three finish this year.




INDIVIDUAL


1. Silas Eastman Fryeburg
Eastman will be gunning for his second state title in a row this fall as he looks to further improve upon his times. Eastman’s time of 16:02.44 last year was the second fastest of all classes. Look for Eastman to not only win the state meet, but to make a strong push for a top ten finish at the New England Championships.

2. Matt McClintock Madison
McClintock really broke through this past year as we saw him post the fastest time of all classes last year at the state meet (16:00.91). Matt has already showed incredible fitness this summer as evidence to his impressive race at Beach to Beacon where he ran 32:15. Look for him to continue to dominate class C once again, and make a strong push for a top ten finish at the New England Championships.

3. Harlow Ladd Messalonskee
An injury during last year’s state meet caused Ladd to run in much pain throughout the race. Despite the pain he still managed to place seventh overall in class A. He had a spectacular outdoor track season as we saw him run 4:27.75 and 9:53.55 at the state meet this past spring. Expect Ladd to bring his talents to another level this fall.

4. Chase Brown Boothbay
Brown had an excellent season last fall topped off by a second place finish at the class C state championships running a time of 16:14.97. Look for Brown to battle Matt McClintock for top dog in class C this year.

5. Tim Follo Falmouth
Follo continued to improve last fall as we saw him place second at the class B state meet running a time of 16:21.30. Look for him to try and close the gap between himself and Silas Eastman this fall.

6. Dan Curts Ellsworth
Curts had an incredible freshmen campaign last fall as we saw him place third at the class B state meet running a time of 16:28.60. With a year of high school training under his belt, look for Curts to bring his talents to another level this fall.

7. Nick Morris Scarborough
The defending class A champion will look to lead his team to another state title this year. Morris’ time of 16:25.15 was the fifth fastest time of all classes. Expect Morris to challenge Ladd for the title in class A this year.

8. Andy Reifman-Packett Mt Ararat
Reifman-Packett placed second at the Laiberte Invitational on Saturday behind Harlow Ladd running a time of 14:09. He is destined for a great season this fall so expect him to challenge Ladd and Morris for the top spot in class A.

9. Joseph Holt-Andrews Telstar
Holt-Andrews had a stellar freshmen campaign last fall as we saw him place third at the class C state meet running a time of 16:33.04. Look for Holt-Andrews to make some noise in class C this year.

10. Jack Pierce Merriconeag
Pierce placed fourth at the class C state meet last fall running a time of 16:45.27. Look for Pierce to close the gap between himself and the other top dogs of class C

The George Feeny Award

The George Feeny Award is given to the top coach in the state. William Daniels starred as George Feeny in the hit TV sitcom Boy Meets World for seven years. George Feeny starts out teaching Corey, Shawn, and Topanga for the first season, and then becomes a teacher/principle from season’s two to five. By the end of the series he follows the gang to the made up Pennbrook University and becomes a college professor. He always got the best out of his students whether it was helping Topanga getting that extra A to put her ahead of Minkus, or helping the troubled Shawn Hunter get into college. Even though he was probably the most serious character in the show he had his fair share of comic relief. While keeping Corey and Shawn in line, he was always quick to tease them of their mistakes. Mr. Feeny not only influenced characters in the show, but he also influenced the viewers who watched as well. He may go down as the greatest principle in a TV sitcom.

Dave Dowling Greely
A lot of people were uncertain of how Greely would do this year due to the departures of Mark McCauley, Logan Price, and Sam Humphries but what Greely accomplished this year was truly incredible. Dowling coached the Rangers to their fourth regional title in a row behind brilliant races from Stefan Sandrueter (8th, 17:33.96) and Nathan Maderia (12th, 17:47.14) while their usual number four runner, Isaac Emery, didn’t race. The Rangers hit their peak at that point in the season. They were one of the favorites going into the state meet, but they got a blow when their number one runner Sam Johnston was ruled ineligible. Had Sam Johnston been able to race that day, Greely may have contended for the top spot.

Falmouth didn’t compete this week which gave their top five some extra rest before they head towards the post season. Look for Falmouth to take home the Western B title at Cumberland on Saturday.

Gorham rested their number one, Logan Marshall, on Friday as they placed second to Scarborough at the Smiling Hill Farms course. Look for Gorham to challenge Scarborough for the Western A title on Saturday.

The Cape boys got some rest this week. We will see if that helps them when they look to challenge Falmouth for the Western B title on Saturday.

Eastman got some rest this week after his impressive run at the WMC Championships. He will be the overwhelming favorite to take the Western B crown on Saturday at Cumberland.

Brown became the first runner to defeat Matt McClintock as he ran to a very fast time of 16:22 at the MVC Championships. He will face off against McClintock again this Saturday at the Eastern Regional Championships.

McClintock suffered his first defeat of the season at the MVC Championships to Chase Brown. He will get another shot at Brown on Saturday when the two runners will face off at the Eastern Regional Championships.

Gorham easily defeated Deering and Kennebunk on Friday behind Logan Marshall’s first place finish (16:32). Gorham will head to Scarborough on Friday.

Cape rested their number one runner, Thomas Bottomley, on Thursday so that had an effect on their placing. Look for them to challenge Falmouth in the post season.

Eastman finally received some competition as he was pushed by Abshir Horor and Tim Follo in the last mile of the WMC Championships before he pulled away to finish with a time of 16:18.80. He will head to Cape on Friday where he will be challenged by Thomas Bottomley of Cape and Ben Nickerson of Yarmouth

McClintock stayed undefeated as he smashed Wade Davis’s course record running a time of 16:34 on his home course. Look for him to continue his winning ways as he heads towards the post season.

Week 5 Power Rankings

The Southwest Classic highlighted this week’s XC action as the top SMAA and WMC teams battled it out on Saturday. Falmouth and Cape rested their top runners while Gorham and Greely took the top two spots respectively. Individually, Fryeburg’s Silas Eastman dominated the field posting an impressive time of 16:42.44, and Wayneflete’s Abshir Horor was 2nd overall as we finally got to see how good he actually is. The heat played a big factor on Saturday as several top runners either dropped back or failed to finish. In other action, Edward Little continues to dominate the KVAC as they won easily at Oxford Hills on Friday while Mt Ararat and Mt Blue battled it out on Friday with Mt Ararat coming out victorious. Here are your updated rankings:

1. Gorham

Last meet: Southwest Classic
Finish: 1st
Gorham won the Southwest Classic on Saturday as Logan Marshall and Jeremy Earl both placed in the top 10. Gorham looks like the early favorite heading to the Festival of Champions.

2. Scarborough

Scarborough moves down a spot after they placed 5th at the Southwest Classic on Saturday. Don’t be surprised to see them bounce back up to the top at Belfast on Saturday.

Falmouth rested their top four on Saturday which was probably a good thing due to the heat. Look for them to have a big meet on Saturday.

Horor’s first race against real competition was very impressive. He could very well challenge Matt Mclintock at the end of the year. Look for him to place in the top ten at Belfast this Saturday.

Perkins continues to surprise everyone in class A. He will have another chance against the top dogs on Wednesday when Sanford will head to Biddeford along with Scarborough and Portland.

#9 Jeff Alden Caribou 1998-2002

9. Jeff Alden Caribou

Jeff Alden went out in style his senior year by breaking the class B 1600 meter record running a blistering time of 4:17.12 in 2002. He also managed to win the 1600 at the New England championships that year as well. His 1600 record was broken three years later by Belfast sensation Levi Miller. Alden had great success in cross country. As a sophomore, he placed 10th at the 1999 state meet running a respectable time of 17:04. the following year he was the runner up at the state championships in Augusta behind Ellsworth's Steven Dewitt clocking in at 16:33.9. A few weeks later at the New England's in Vermont, he achieved All New England status by placing 12th with a time of 17:03 as he was the 3rd Mainer to cross the finish line that day behind Jeff Gaudette and Pat Tarpy. Alden had a successful running career at Colby College. As a senior he clocked in a 9:13.46 3000 meter run and he posted a time of 4:11.07 in the 1500.
