Girls Class B Distance Preview

Kirstin Sandreuter of Greely will be one to watch in the mile and the two mile. Her anticipated match up against Aleta Looker of Ellsworth could be one for the ages.

800

Record: Abby Chapman Greely 2:15.28 2003

Aleta Looker of Ellsworth is the overwhelming favorite to take the 800 meter title on Monday as she currently holds the fastest time in the state regardless of class running 2:13.87 which is just off her own all-time Maine record. The Georgetown University commit should be able to win this event with relative ease, but expect her to try and chase down the record which is currently held by Abby Chapman of Greely who ran 2:15.28 back in 2003. Last week at the EMITL, Looker won the 800 by an astonishing fifteen seconds running a time of 2:20.88. Other runners to watch in this event include Hailey Petsinger of Cape Elizabeth.  She won the 800 at the WMC Championships running a time of 2:30.51. Expect her to challenge for the runner up spot. The 800 field isn’t remarkably deep, but Petsinger has two teammates in Hayle Doss and Eva Brysdon who could potentially give the Capers some extra points for the team competition if they can both place in the top eight. Other runners to watch for in this event will be Fern Morrison of Foxcroft, and Haley Steckler of Freeport.

Mile

Record: Bethanie Brown Waterville 5:00.31 2013

Bethanie Brown’s record will likely be safe this year, but the showdown between Kirstin Sandreuter of Greely and Aleta Looker of Ellsworth will be the most exciting race of the day tomorrow. Both runners have been on a tear this winter. Sandreuter comes into the meet with the second fastest time in Class B in 5:11.93. Last week at the WMC Championships, Sandreuter won both the mile and the two mile in league record times. The pace of the race could determine the victor as Looker has superior leg speed, but Sandreuter has the ability to grind out races. It will be interesting to see the diverse running styles between them. Heather Evans of York is another runner to watch in this event. She’s been one of the most consistent runners in the WMC this year, and with Looker and Sandreuter likely setting a fast pace, look for Evans to run a fast time as well. Other runners to watch will be Emily Mason of Greely, Brittany Bowman of Camden Hills and Anna Lastra of Fryeburg.

2 Mile

Record: Bethanie Brown Waterville 10:46.95

The aforementioned Kirstin Sandreuter of Greely should be able to win the two mile with relative ease. While she’s the overwhelming favorite, she might try to run a very fast time in order to get into one of the fastest heats at the New England Championships. She comes in with a season best time of 11:07.26. Aleta Looker comes into this race with the fourth fastest time in Class B in 11:54.65. Expect her to battle for second with runners such as Heather Evans of York, Brittany Bowman of Camden Hills and Hannah Austin of NYA. They all have broken the 12 minute barrier this winter, and will look to run even faster tomorrow. Other runners to watch for will be Emily Mason of Greely, Abby Hersom of Oceanside and Caroline Driscoll of MDI.

Kirstin Sandreuter Greely

SB: 17:48.60
Sandreuter was far and away the top female runner in the state this fall, as she won her first state title in dominating fashion. Remember, Sandreuter was sidelined for a few weeks due to injury, so her dominating performances after her comeback are even more impressive. She won the Manchester Invitational small schools race running a fast time of 18:59. Her time that day was the fifth fastest of all races. After her return, she had a spectacular performance at the Western B Regionals running the fastest time of all classes (19:02.02). At the state meet, she took the lead right from the start, and never looked back running an amazing time of 18:37.96 on the tough Twin Brook's course. Last week at New England's, Sandreuter had the race of her life as she placed fourth running a personal best time of 17:48.60 at Manchester. If she chooses to race at Footlocker, she should have an outside shot at a top ten finish, and make a trip to Nationals. Look for her to run some incredibly fast times in the winter and spring this year. 



2. Kialeigh Marston Bonny Eagle
SB: 18:42.94
The sophomore won her first xc state title two weeks ago running a time of 19:34.16. She also won the Festival of Champions running a time of 18:42.94. She will be the favorite to defend her title next fall.

3. Aleta Looker Ellsworth
SB: 18:54.85
Looker placed second at the Class B State meet running a time of 19:49.33. She dominated Eastern Maine this fall. She also placed third in the small schools race at Manchester running 19:23. 

4. Shannon Conley South Portland
SB: 18:59.21
Conley placed second to Kialeigh Marston at the Festival of Champions running a fantastic time of 18:59.21. She also placed second at the Class A state meet running a time of 19:40.75. Expect her to run some big times this winter and spring.

5. Carsyn Koch Washburn
SB: 19:15.15
Koch joined elusive company as she became only the second runner in Maine history to win four xc state individual titles joining Abbey Leonardi. She placed sixth at the Festival of Champions running a season best time of 19:15.15.

Koch accomplished something only Abbey Leonardi has done by winning four straight xc titles on Saturday as she cruised to a time of 20:24.79. Look for Koch to challenge for a top twenty finish at New Englands.

Johnson came out victorious in a muddy run at Portland running a fast time of 20:08. She will face some of the top SMAA runners at South Portland on Friday.

Bowman placed second to her aforementioned teammate Emma Trapani running a solid time of 20:53. Look for her to challenge for the win at Medomak Valley

Girls Individual Rankings Week 1

1. Kirstin Sandrueter Greely

Previous: 1 Meet: Home Place: 1^st Time: 18:46

Sandrueter simply dominated on her home course as she cruised to a fast time of 18:46. Her time would have placed her seventh in the boy’s race. Sandrueter’s next race is at Lake Region on Friday.

2. Aleta Looker Ellsworth

Previous: 4 Meet: Ellsworth Invitational Place: 1^st Time: 19:35

Looker cruised to an easy victory on her home course as she stopped the clock at 19:35. It was enough for a 30 second victory. Looker will next compete at the Presque Isle invitational this Saturday.

3. Shannon Conley South Portland

Previous: 3 Meet: SMAA Relays Place: 2^nd Time: 9:45

Conley placed second at the SMAA Relays covering the 1.5 mile course in 9:45. She looks poised to have another tremendous year. South Portland heads Cheverus on Friday where she will face off against Kiera Murray.

4. Kiera Murray Cheverus

Previous: 7 Meet: SMAA Relays Place: 3th Time: 9:55

Murray placed third at the SMAA Relays running a time of 9:55. Cheverus is host to several teams on Friday which includes South Portland’s Shannon Conley. Expect those two to duke it out for the win.

5. Mary Szatkowski Bonny Eagle

Previous: 2 Meet: SMAA Relays Place: 4^th Time: 10:02

The senior from Bonny Eagle had the fourth fastest time at the SMAA Relays running 10:02. Bonny Eagle heads to McAuley on Friday where she should go unchallenged.

6. Maggie Painter MDI

Previous: 10 Meet: Ellsworth Invitational Place: 2^nd Time: 20:06

Painter placed second to Aleta Looker at the Ellsworth Invitational covering the tough 3.05 mile course in 20:06. She will have another tough challenge when MDI heads to the Presque Isle invitational on Saturday.

7. Teresa Murphy Brunswick

Previous: UR Meet: at Maranacook Place: 1^st Time: 21:29

Murphy came out victorious in her first KVAC meet of the season at Maranacook. She covered the course in 21:29, ten seconds ahead of her teammate, Tessa Cassidy. Brunswick races at Lawrence on Friday.

8. Tessa Cassidy Brunswick

Previous: 8 Meet: at Maranacook Place: 2^nd Time: 21:39

Cassidy placed second to her aforementioned teammate Teresa Murphy at Maranacook as she stopped the clock at 21:39. Expect her to challenge for the win at Lawrence this Friday.

9. Anne Guadalupi Cony

Previous: UR Meet: at Winslow Place: 1^st Time: 20:05

The freshman from Cony surprised the KVAC community as she edged Emily Trapani of Camden Hills to take the win, running a time of 20:05. She has catapulted herself into the conversation as the top runner in the KVAC. She will face a tough challenge when Cony heads to Lawrence on Friday.

10. Emily Trapani Camden Hills

 Previous: UR Meet: at Winslow Place: 2^nd Time: 20:07

Trapani placed second to the aforementioned Anne Guadalupi of Cony running a time of 20:07. Look for her to challenge for the win when Camden heads to Belfast on Friday.

Preseason Rankings: Girls Individuals

 

1 .Kirstin Sandrueter Greely

SB: 19:01 States 2013: 2nd Class B

 

Sandrueter is the top returner coming into the fall. She has shown that she's already fit with great performances at the Clam Festival and Beach to Beacon. She's the favorite to win her first xc title.

 

2 .Mary Szatkowski Bonny Eagle

SB: 19:07 States 2013: 4th Class A

 

The Bonny Eagle senior is the top returner in Class A after she finished fourth last fall. She also had a great year on the track as well as she placed second in the 3200 in June running 11:39. She's one of the many favorites to win the Class A title.

 

3.  Shannon Conley South Portland

SB: 18:57 States 2013: 5th Class A

 

Conley transferred from Cheverus to South Portland this year, and will be one of the favorites in the SMAA. She's shown she's already fit with her sub 40 performance at Beach to Beacon. She is also one of the favorites to win in Class A.

4. Aleta Looker Ellsworth

SB: 19:17 States 2013: 9th Class B

Looker was one of the most dominant runners in the state last fall which makes her a threat to win the Class B title. She also holds the second fastest 800 time in Maine history with a 2:14 clocking. Expect her to contend for the win in Class B.

5. Brittany Bowman Camden Hills

SB: 19:03 States 2013: 3rd Class B

Bowman had a tremendous season last fall as we saw her place third running a time of 19:19. The senior from Camden Hills should also be in contention to win the Class B title.

6. Carsyn Koch Washburn

SB: 19:06 States 2013: 1st Class C

Koch is one more state title away from beginning the only runner (along with Abbey Leonardi) to win four consecutive state titles. She is the top returner in Class C and should contend for a top fifteen finish at the New England championships.

 

7. Kiera Murray Cheverus

SB: 19:18 States 2013: 7th Class A

Murray will be one of the top SMAA returners this fall after she placed seventh at the state meet. Expect her to contend for a top five finish at states.

  

               8. Tessa Cassidy Brunswick

              SB: 19:40 States 2013: 9th Class A

 Cassidy was the top freshman in the state last fall as we saw her place ninth at the state meet. She's one of the favorites in the KVAC and a threat for a top five finish at states.

              9. Eva Bates Greely

              SB: 19:23 States 2013: 4th Class B

Bates emerged as one of the top runners in Class B last fall after her spectacular performance at the Manchester Invitational. Look for her to contend for a top five finish.

10. Maggie Painter MDI

SB: 19:19 States 2013: 11th Class B

Painter will be one of the top runners in the PVC this year. She had a tremendous year last fall as we saw her placed 11th at states. She should contend for a top five finish.

Brown just continues to obliterate the competition every time she laces up her spikes. She cruised to a time of 18:46.11. If the weather is up to par, look for Brown to chase down the course record of 17:48.

2.         Erzsebet Nagy Lawrence

Place: 1st Class A

Time: 20:10.33

Nagy has been dominant since she returned from her injury and Saturday was no different as she ran to a time of 20:10.33. She is the favorite to win her first Class A title on Saturday.

3.         Aleta Looker Ellsworth

Previous: 3

Meet: EMR

Place: 2^nd Class B

Time: 20:14.21

Looker placed second to Bethanie Brown at the Class B EMR running a time of 20:14.21. Her time was the third fastest of all classes. She looks like a lock to secure the runner up spot in Class B on Saturday.

Bowman placed third at the Class B EMR running a time of 20:34.43. Look for Bowman to contend for a top three finish on Saturday.
